There hasn't been exactly a flurry of leaks around the Huawei Mate V, supposedly a folding flip top that's about to be released, but we've heard rumors about it. Now a patent has emerged detailing how Huawei could keep this device cool.

The patent, discovered by LetsGoDigital (via Notebookcheck.net), describes an intelligent thermal management system that involves a collapsible heat pipe. The heat pipe hasn't traditionally been part of a smartphone known for its folding capabilities, but it seems that Huawei engineers have found a way to remove it.

As is always the case with patents, there is no indication in which device it might appear. Given that the Huawei Mate V would launch earlier this month, this unconventional, foldable heat pipe may not be included in it.

Huawei's foldable future

Much of the patent is made up of very technical descriptions (it spans 46 pages) and we learn that there is a flexible polymer layer in between. The heat pipe can be made of copper, titanium, or aluminum, according to Huawei.

What now seems clear is that Huawei is committed to offering more foldable phones in the future. Huawei is one of the few manufacturers that has decided to release phones that it can fold - check out the Huawei Mate X, Huawei Mate Xs, and Huawei Mate X2.

The Huawei Mate V appears to be somewhat different and would adopt the clamshell form factor of phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Motorola Razr. If the leaks are true, we may not have to wait any longer to see them for ourselves.!

Analysis: folding is where the innovation is

The discovery of this new Huawei patent is another reminder of where much of the innovation in the smartphone industry takes place: in foldable devices. While standard phones tend to give us more of the same, flip phones offer something that looks really different - and from the future.

Of course, the main innovation is this folding mechanism in the center of each device. As companies like Samsung have released more and more foldable phones, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the technology has matured and become more reliable over time.

However, manufacturers are also using collapsible objects as a way to showcase other cutting-edge features: think secondary screens for notifications, cameras for selfies that live below the screen, and support for pencils. And now maybe bend the heat pipes.

It's almost as if the foldable phone form factor gives manufacturers a license to be a little more experimental, and that's something we appreciate. It looks like we will have many more of these innovative devices in the future as well, with rumors that Google and Apple will enter the fray in the next few years.
